Hi, Socks here I thought I would introduce myself to Whiskers' friends. I lived 10 years after Whiskers died and I missed my brother every day. Now that we are together at the Rainbow Bridge I asked Mom if I could join him on his blog. I was diagnosed with hyperthyroidism way back in 2013, possibly due to the food I ate. I did a post on the link between hyperthyroidism and cat food here Socks Meows "Is your Cats Food Causing Hyperthyroidism?" 

In 2017 I got a tumor on my jaw and at the age of 16 1/2 I went to the rainbow bridge. So like Whiskers I want to be a voice for the cats and dogs. From time to time I will blog about pet food and medical issues that affect cats and dogs. ~Socks

I think about Whiskers everyday. His death changed me in so many ways. I will never trust petfood companies to provide safe food for our pets, I will question the food that is supposedly human grade and I will always wonder if there was anything I could do to save my sweet boy.

It's been awhile since I have meowed at you. Don't worry I am still watching over my people. Lots has changed since I have been gone. Eldest boy has a house of his own., and has two dogs. Youngest boy is working on his Masters. I have new siblings that came after me, but one thing that hasn't changed is the prejudice black cats face. One woman is trying to change that with a book to educate the public about how wonderful black cats are.

No Recall, but is Purina Pet Food Safe?

As far as I can determine there hasn't been a recall of any Purina Pet Food Products, but I have read enough on the Internet to make me leery of feeding any Purina pet food, so today I returned the unopened bag of Purina Fit and Trim to Winn-Dixie they were very nice about taking the food back and very concerned that something might be wrong with it.

I first became concerned after a personal friend posted this Purina ONE Beyond food review and this Sick kitties... on her blog.

Looked it up and while there is no official recall (yet), there are lots of reports of this food (all Purina actually) causing problems in cats and dogs lately (vomiting, diarrhea, lethargy, increased thirst, etc) and there is early speculation that there MAY be a toxin (not salmonella or e. coli but an actual toxin) in it.

I dug around a bit online and several people have been complaining about Purina products.

I just don't feel comfortable feeding Purina right now. I have a bag of Taste of the Wild for the dogs now, and will probably start using Iams and Eukanuba more. If anyone can suggest high quality food for a good price suggestions are welcome. I like to feed a variety of different brands although several of the foods my friends feed aren't available locally. I am pretty much limited to what PetSmart, Winn-Dixie, Wal-Mart and T&N Feed Store carry. The cats are already eating Iams dry cat food and Authority canned catfood. They wound up with some Natural Balance canned catfood today as I got the dry dogfood at T&N.

It saddens me that Purina isn't issuing a voluntary recall and trying to find out what is wrong with their product. This is all to reminiscent of 2007 when petfood companies ignored complaints that their petfood was making pets sick or outright killing them. Whiskers died in March 2007 of kidney failure because he was eating food that was recalled 2 weeks after his death. If they had not drug their feet about issuing a recall my beautiful boy would still be alive.

Police Officer shoots chained dog while 3 year old pleads for the dogs life

In Gulfport, Mississippi the same city where Melmo was viciously killed by a cop in March, another chained dog has been shot.

Monday, December 12th police offers were serving a search warrant. Spook was chained in the adjacent yard when he was brutally shot by a police offer who ignored the pleas of a three year old little girl to spare her dogs life. The family was not allowed to seek immediate medical attention for Spook.  Two hours later the Police took Spook to a veterinarian of their choice where they had Spook put down without consulting the owner.

1.            This sweet pooch was loved by the neighbors.
2.            The end of the leash is about three car lengths from the front door.
3.            Technically, the leash was tied to a tree in my mother’s yard, next door, and it is more in the side of the yard rather than the front. (refutes sudden lunging)
4.            When the officer pulled out the gun, my children, who were right there, begged him not to shoot. (refutes unexpected or surprise attack)
5.            They had a search warrant for “cocaine and drug legers” and after searching for hours, found no such thing.  Also, because they had a search warrant, they watched my house for a long time, knowing full well he was no threat. 
6.            When shot, Spook was bleeding, and they refused to let us help him or take him to a vet.
7.            two hours after shooting, they took him to a vet in Long Beach.  The  vet said that he did not have the skill or equipment to try to save him.
8.            without consulting with me, GPPD authorized putting to sleep.
9.            GPPD took Spook from the vet, and did not return him to me.
10.            I feel lost without my baby boy.  I feel violated and unprotected 

How can we get justice for Spook and how can we insure that our pets are safe from the police who are suppose to protect and serve us?

Petfood Recall

It was dismaying to read that both Iams and Cargill have recalled petfood, but at least the petfood companies seem to be taking the health of our pets seriously and issued the recall before pets died.

Alternatives to Breed Specific Bans

Many of the shelter dogs Perkinson advocates adopting would be considered pitbulls or pitbull mixes “Pitbull” is a generic term and does not refer to any recognized breed. Purebred American Staffordshire Terriers, Staffordshire Bull Terriers, American Pit Bull Terriers, and Bull Terriers all fall into the category of pit bull dogs. Well-behaved show dogs, pets, therapy dogs, service dogs, and working dogs of these breeds would be punished by a ban. 

Banning particular breeds rips well behaved dogs out of their loving family’s arms to be murdered just because they are a certain breed, not because they have done anything wrong. Do you really want to take someone’s (especially a child’s) dog away just because it is a certain breed? 

Because breeds and mixes are hard to identify many dogs are mislabeled and destroyed based on paranoia and prejudice. The American Veterinary Medical Association opposes breed-specific legislation for just this reason

Alternatives to Breed Specific Bans:

1. Develop animal control programs that encourage dog owners to properly socialize, train, and care for their dogs so that they can become good canine citizens.
2. Enforcement of leash laws -- fine owners who let their dogs run loose or fail to keep them in secure enclosures. Use the money collected from these fines to fund community dog safety and responsible ownership programs.
3. Significant penalties for those involved in any inhumane or irresponsible activity with animals.
4. Teach the children of the community about responsible dog ownership and care. The American Kennel Club has a free education program on dog care for elementary schools. Children need to be taught to respect animals, no child should attempt to chase or corner a dog of any breed as the dog perceives it as a threat and will attempt to either flee or defend itself.

 I am doing my Livestrong post in memory of Mommy's Uncle Leland Jackson.  He had prostate cancer and fought it bravely. He went into remission but then one day the cancer came back and it was in his bones. He was battling his cancer when Katrina came, so not only did he have to deal with being really sick from the cancer he had to deal with not having any air condition and other stuffs we take for granted due to the conditions after Katrina. Mommy loved her Uncle Leland and misses him very much.

Remembering 9/11 ~ Words of Wisdome from Whiskers

I was still on planet Earth on 9/11/01, the day the Twin Towers fell. Mommy was homeschooling both the boys and she was giving them a test when EBB's friend called. Mommy didn't believe him at first but she did eventually turn on the TV, we were all horrified by the images we saw. The loss of life made us all very sad.

But I am thinking that some of the stuff I am seeing today is more about stirring things up and making people angry then about honoring those who died. I am seeing a lot about how you how you are resolved to fight "The War on Terror", what does that mean exactly? Does that mean you are going to run over to a foreign country and bomb them? How is that solving anything? The master mind behind the 9/11 attacks has been killed and I applaud you for hunting him down., but now it is time to start healing the wounds. Yes, I know he had followers, but exactly why were they following him?  Hmmmmmmmmm

Look your humans need to start getting along with each other better.  They need to stop looking at all the ways they are different and see more of the things they have in common. They need to learn to be more tolerant of people who believe different things then they do and they need to be more respectful of each others beliefs. They really don't want me to have to come give them the smacky paw cause they can't get along.

Mo Cats Day

Well I certainly think that more cats should have forever homes and that more cats should be famous and be on the Internets and stuff.  According to EBB (Eldest Boy Bean) I am the Supreme Ruler of the Universe and come from a Planet called Whiskeria, were cats rule, humans are slaves and everyone speaks Whiskerian. Just let me know if the humans aren't treating you right on Planet Earth, I am prepared to send my fleet to invade and take over the governorship of your planet, the humans seem to be making a mess of things. Oh and that religion thing they keep fighting about, not a problem on Whiskeria everyone worships ME! Once I invade freedom of religion will be a thing of the past (the humans just seem to use it as an excuse to fight anyway) worshiping me is mandatory.
